This rug, with its matching bedside rugs, is inspired by the geometric design of the traditional saddlebag from the Sardinian village of Samughéo. In not too far times, up until less than a century ago, when in every village on the island one family out of three owned a weaving loom and provided for its own needs of blankets, curtains and other textiles goods, each village developed its own distinctive textile pattern and the men, in the fields, recognized each other's provenance by the pattern of the saddlebags they carried on their shoulders or on the backs of horses and donkeys.
The typical design from Samughéo, consisting of a checkerboard alternating with bands of elongated squares, was made in wool and cotton, strictly in black and white, and woven with a canvas weave. In the transposition into a carpet, here the yarn becomes all wool, the weaving is the typical Sardinian “a pibiònes” and two color variations are introduced; the dense checkerboard grid of the traditional design expands and gradually dissolves towards the central part of the artifact to give rise to a sparser one, composed of a weave of hexagonal geometries that, although very different from the original, do not alter its recognizability in any way.
